DCH Auto Group's roots begin in the late 1930's when current chairman Shau-wai Lam’s father, B.Y. Lam, established Dah Chong Hong Trading Corporation in Shanghai and later added a branch and a bank in Hong Kong.  Mr. Lam then traveled to New York City and established an American subsidiary for DCH, which specialized in importing textiles and food.

In 1977, DCH shifted its business focus to the automotive industry, and in 1992, the Lam family and another family in Hong Kong led a buyout of the American subsidiary, which by then was focused solely on automotive retailing.

About our Chairman, Shau-wai Lam

Shau-wai Lam joined DCH in 1967 and initially began work in the company’s international trade operations, which included the domestic sales of imported textile and food products.  In 1979, after DCH had expanded into automotive retailing with its first dealership, Paramus Honda in New Jersey, Lam moved to Los Angeles to launch the company’s Western Region.  He oversaw the start-up of DCH Gardena Honda and DCH Tustin Acura.  Under his supervisions, both became the top national ranking dealerships of their respective franchises.

In 1988, Lam was appointed President of DCH and continued to the lead the company’s expansion to 25 dealerships in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and California.  Under his leadership DCH has become one of largest automobile retailer in the United States, with annual sales surpassing $1.83 billion.  He has set the tone for each dealership to thrive, instilling a corporate culture committed to innovation, integrity and superior customer service.

Lam is a graduate of Purdue University with BS and MS degrees in mathematics.  He also has an MBA from New York University.  Among his numerous awards and honors, Lam received the Distinguished Science Alumnus Award from Purdue University in 2004 and was named the 2005 Ward's Dealer of the Year and is the recipient of the eminent 2006 Ellis Island Medal of Honor award and the 2005 Newsweek Magazine Dealer of the Year Finalist Award. Lam also earned distinctions as the 2004 Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award for New Jersey, the 2004 National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers’ Lifetime Achievement Award, and the 2004 Champion of Life Award from GMAC, in addition to other accolades.

 

About our CEO and President, Susan Scarola

Susan Scarola is currently President and Chief Executive Officer.  In her first, very brief career, she taught kindergarten in rural upstate NY and then transitioned to business in a Human Resources Department in a large NYC engineering firm. After obtaining her M.B.A. from New YorkUniversity she joined KPMG’s Private Business Advisory Services and obtained her CPA license. DCH quickly became one of her favorite clients and she readily accepted the opportunity to join the DCH team in 1985.

 

Scarola helped DCH in its early growth years solidifying the group’s treasury functions and spearheading its first Human Resources Department. Her “people” skills assisted the senior team strategize for growth and she assumed ongoing responsibilities with the Executive Management Team. Prior to accepting her current responsibilities Scarola was Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President overseeing Human Resources and other administrative functions. She spends the majority of her time focusing on the DCH brand and the employees that make the brand come to life for our customers.

 

About our Vice Chairman, Billy Wong

Billy Wong joined DCH Auto Group in 1981 and is currently the company’s Vice Chairman.  Prior to this appointment, Wong was Chief Operating Officer, and has also held the position of Executive Vice President and Senior Regional Manager responsible for all of DCH’s dealerships in the New York-New Jersey region.

Before joining DCH, he held various financial and management positions with General Foods Corp. and Esmark Inc.  Wong received his BA from Stanford University and holds an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

About Senior Vice President and COO – Western Region, T.Y. Lai

T.Y. Lai joined DCH Hong Kong, the former parent company of DCH Auto Group, in 1970 and is currently Chief Operations Officer for DCH’s Western Region. 

Born and educated in Hong Kong, Lai’s first responsibilities with DCH included advancing trade relations with China.  He transferred to DCH’s New York office in the 1990s and began work in the company’s automotive division, rising to Area Vice President in charge of operations for several of the company’s New Jersey dealerships.

Since 2007, Lai has directed operations as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) for DCH Auto Group’s Western Region, covering the company’s 12 dealerships in California located between Oxnard and San Diego.

About Senior Vice President and COO – Eastern Region, George Liang

George Liang, a graduate of University of California at Berkeley (B.A.) and University of British Columbia, Canada (M.B.A.), was Vice President of Banque Nationale de Paris for eleven years specializing in commercial and syndicated loan financing prior to joining DCH in 1988. 

He made the transition to automobile retailing by assisting the General Manager at DCH Freehold Toyota where he was subsequently promoted to Group General Manager at Freehold overseeing both Toyota and Nissan dealerships.  In 1993, Liang was transferred to Oxnard, California as Regional Manager overseeing six dealerships.  In 2001 he assumed responsibility for all of DCH’s LA region dealerships and was instrumental in the company’s expansion to Temecula, California in 2004.

Currently, Liang is Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of DCH Auto Group’s Eastern Region responsible for the operation of all the dealerships in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.
